It is native to southern China and eastern India. Mucuna, or musk pea, has numerous properties, including helping to alleviate sexual problems, improving male fertility and acting as a nerve tonic. Its content of L-dopa, an amino acid that is transformed into dopamine in the brain, is known for its possible action on cognitive disorders. Mucuna is also attributed with effects on other conditions such as anemia (decrease in the number of red blood cells), dysentery (infectious disease of the colon), amenorrhea (absence of menstruation), etc. Food supplements should never replace a healthy and balanced diet.
