Probiotics are microorganisms that are part of our microbiota or beneficial bacterial population that inhabits our intestine. A balanced microbiota contributes to better regulation of metabolic functions, optimal absorption of nutrients and control of intestinal permeability. All these processes are related to the maintenance of health.
Intestinal dysbiosis (alteration of the microbiota) has been correlated with an increased risk of diseases such as obesity, diabetes, certain types of cancer or autoimmune diseases.
The intake of certain probiotic strains, in standardised doses and in the form of food supplements, contributes to the maintenance of the intestinal and/or vaginal microbiota. After taking certain medications, such as antibiotics, this type of supplementation provides significant benefits. It is also possible to take advantage of these benefits in other parts of our organism (such as the vaginal, cutaneous or scalp microbiota), by adding probiotic ingredients to body and facial cosmetics or to vaginal health products. In these last examples, the incorporation of specific probiotics also helps to restore this balance from the outside (topically).
