After an injury, the body immediately responds with a reparative reaction by initiating a healing process. This process, whose starting point is inflammation, is characterized by a succession of biological and biochemical events that lead to a significant phenotypic modulation of skin tissue cells. These skin cells, as well as proinflammatory cells, synthesize several molecules necessary for the healing process, in particular metalloproteinases, cytokines and matrix proteins. All these molecules play a vital role in the proliferation, migration and differentiation of skin cells. This cellular hyperactivity promotes the re-epithelialization process by increasing the rate of cell proliferation and the speed of keratinocyte migration. Thus, the wound (the connective space) is filled with a new extracellular matrix secreted in abundance by fibroblasts on which the keratinocytes of the epithelium settle.
