Pharmaceutical Advice

Figs are a sweet and highly nutritious food with high fibre content. This fruit (Ficus carica), was highly valued in Ancient Greece and nicknamed the philosophers' fruit. It has a 50% sugar content, but it is high in dietary fibre which counteracts this glucose load. It also contains minerals such as iron and calcium, and vitamins A, B1, B2 and C. This is why figs are an energetic food that can be included in a healthy and varied diet.

As an ingredient in dietary supplements, fig fibre can help with constipation paired with a diet that enhances soluble and insoluble fibre intake and water intake. Physical exercise also promotes intestinal motility and should always be taken into account.

Fig extract has also been used to maintain respiratory comfort. Its soluble fibre, such as pectin, can help to maintain blood cholesterol levels. It has a satiating and mildly laxative effect. Using dietary supplements is not a substitute for a healthy, balanced diet.
