The vitreous is a gelatinous substance that makes up 4/5 of the internal volume of the eye and helps maintain its tonicity. Its consistency and transparency are ensured by a composition that contains 80% sodium hyaluronate.
From the age of 50, or even earlier in myopes, patients with cataracts, or after an eye injury, the sodium hyaluronate in the vitreous has a natural tendency to depolymerize and liquefy progressively. The sodium hyaluronate changes structure, disintegrates, and clumps together in the form of precipitates.
Vision may then become blurry due to the perception of floating bodies or "flying flies" fluttering in front of the eyes; these are called floaters. In this degeneration of the vitreous, enzymatic degradation and oxidation are involved.
Vitamin B6 helps reduce fatigue and supports the normal functioning of the nervous system.
