Indigestion is characterized by a set of symptoms related to the digestion of food, which usually occurs after eating, such as:
abdominal pain or discomfort
sensation of fullness
belching
nausea
heartburn
loss of appetite
Typically, complaints of poor digestion can be distinguished into two groups:
sensation of pain or burning in the stomach area
difficulty digesting food
According to the Portuguese Society of Gastroenterology, dyspepsia is more common in countries with a Westernized lifestyle, affecting around 20 to 40% of the population. It is a common health issue, and it is estimated that around 3 million Portuguese suffer or have suffered from dyspepsia or indigestion.
