Prebiotics are plant fibres that promote intestinal bacteria (microbiota) growth and activity. A balanced microbiota means better metabolic function regulation, optimal nutrient absorption and intestinal permeability under control. All of these processes are related to maintaining overall health.
Gut dysbiosis (microbiota imbalance) has been linked with an increased risk of diseases such as obesity, diabetes, certain types of cancer and autoimmune diseases. This is why dietary supplements with prebiotics can be good to support overall well-being.
We should include prebiotics in our diet (you can ensure the intake by following the Mediterranean Diet). When the quantity in our food is not enough or when there are specific needs, supplements can provide extra help. When the deficit or need affects other parts of the body (such as the vaginal or scalp microbiota), prebiotic ingredients can be added to cosmetics that can also help to externally restore the balance (topically).
If you are considering using them, consult a healthcare professional to make sure they are right for you.
