Senna is a plant widely known for its laxative properties. It contains substances (sennosides) that are responsible for this action. Food supplements with senna extract can be used for occasional constipation. But it is important to emphasize this occasional use: it is not recommended to use them for more than a week without the supervision of a health professional. It is a plant contraindicated in case of inflammatory diseases of the colon or in the presence of abdominal pain. If in doubt, it is best to consult a professional. Excessive use of this plant can cause irritation of the intestinal mucosa and / or a decrease in the level of potassium in the blood which, in turn, can have other repercussions on the state of health. Use food supplements according to the labeling and, in case of constipation, remember: include foods that provide fiber in the diet, drink water and avoid a sedentary lifestyle.
