Pharmaceutical Advice

Saffron is a highly aromatic spice that comes from the Crocus sativus flower. It is highly valued in cooking for its intense flavour and as a food colouring. It is popularly known as 'red gold', due to its highly complex harvesting method.

It can also be found as an ingredient in dietary supplements, as it is a source of valuable antioxidants, including carotenoids. Safranal (the substance that provides saffron with its aroma) and crocin (the substance that provides its typical colour) are just two of the antioxidant compounds identified, that help to alleviate oxidative stress. Saffron extract is therefore used in dietary supplements for retinal care, as a neuroprotective agent, as support in times of low mood or to help alleviate premenstrual syndrome. They are not recommended for use during pregnancy.

Remember that dietary supplements are not a substitute for a healthy, balanced diet. If in doubt, consult a healthcare professional.
