Guarana (Paullinia cupana) is a plant known for its caffeine and other similar chemical substance content.
Caffeine helps stimulate the central nervous system, which is why guarana is an ingredient used in several dietary supplements indicated to increase athletic and mental performance or energy levels in general, due to its invigorating nature.
It is also present in supplements to support weight loss, as it has a thermogenic effect. In other words, it helps to increase energy expenditure and lipolysis (fat-burning metabolism). There are several precautions and contraindications to take into account when taking any supplement. This supplement is not recommended in the evening, as it can interfere with sleep. It is also not suitable for people who experiencing nervousness or are particularly sensitive to caffeine, have cardiac arrhythmia, tachycardia or hypertension. It is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Long-term supplementation with this plant extract is also not recommended. If in doubt, it is always advisable to consult a healthcare professional.
Caffeine from guarana can be used in cosmetics as an energising and firming ingredient. It also helps to activate local circulation, which can be of interest in cellulite products.
